Paradise in Service (Jun Zhong Le Yuan 軍中樂園)

Doze Niu Chen-Zer / Taiwan / 2014 / 133 mins

Ethan Juan, Chen Jian Bin, Wan Qian, Chen Yi Han / Fiction / Mandarin, Taiwanese

A coming-of-age story in a military-run Taiwanese brothel.

Set against the real-life backdrop of a military run brothel in Kinman (a group of islands administered by Taiwan) in the late 1960s and ‘70s – the period when Taiwan remained in a stand-off with mainland China – 19-year-old conscript Pao (Ethan Juan) is sent to unit 831, or ‘Paradise in Service’. There he starts to develop adult relationships, not least with Nini (Wan Qian), who turned to prostitution to have her sentence for killing her abusive husband reduced. A fascinating and non-judgemental portrait of a turbulent time.

The post-screen Q & A and the VIP reception in conjunction with EIFF events are hosted.
