Animation Director Ching-Hsuan Lin

Ching-Hsuan Lin, filmmaker and artist. Graduated from Graduate Institute of Sound and Image Studies in Animation, Tainan National University of the Arts. And honed her computer animation skills in a post-graduate program at Sheridan College, Canada. Studying in Doctoral Program in Art Creation and Theory in Tainan National University of the Arts now. Her research interests include moving images, animation and contemporary art. Her works focus on time and memory through experimental approach. She won the “Best Animation” prize both at the Taipei Film Festival and South Taiwan Film Festival, the “Special Mentions of the International Jury” prize at Fimfest Dresden – International Short Film Festival, Germany. 

林青萱,1982 年生於臺北,臺灣。畢業於加拿大謝爾丹學院電腦動畫研究所及國立臺南藝術大學音像動畫研究所。主要研究領域為動態影像、動畫與當代藝術等。創作核心聚焦於以實驗影像與動畫探討時間與記憶。作品曾獲台北電影節「最佳動畫獎」、南方影展「南方動畫獎」及德國德勒斯登短片影展「國際評審團特別推薦獎」等。

The good things that we try to keep; eventually vanished somehow. However, they still exist in our memory.

個人創作專注於將日常生活中的感受轉化為動態影像,當面臨生離死別、生老病死,那些與之相關的回憶,在經過多少年後,留下的是什麼樣的痕跡?透過《氣息》捕捉「畫霧」,結合物理科學與動畫,實驗以一種作為「霧」稍縱即逝卻又看似永恆的活動證據,所衍生「觀看看不見」的影像創作方式。 

本創作《氣息》拍攝期為長達四個月,並於密不透風的車內進行。利用熱凝結之結霧現象本身稍縱即逝的特性,在起霧的車窗玻璃上繪製近 3000 餘次,以逐格方式結合現場實景,同時進行繪製與拍攝。影片主要欲表現眼神中的恐懼幻化成杳無人煙的單行道,車子劃破寂靜的夜晚匆促駛去,孤獨地只留下車燈閃爍的光跡。時間像是走在擁擠的大樓中,一去不復返。關於旅行、愛情、出生或死亡,想要蒐藏停留於過去的美好時光,像是靜止的照片或是烙印於記憶中的影像,然而卻終究存在於一層又一層的時間之中。即便如此,還是鼓起勇氣且不間斷地迎向那即將稍縱即逝,或如夢幻如泡影般的片刻時光。

“A person is about to destroy the world, who is going to save it?” This is a story recounting a person’s capability of doing things, and people trapped in a fictitious city. The ultimate aim of the project “Battle City” was not to make an animation, but the process of making it itself. During this process, Chang Li-Ren constantly attempted to emphasize a person’s ability to do thing. 

“一個人即將毀滅世界,拯救世界的將會是誰?”這是一個在虛擬城市裡訴說著關於一個人能做甚麼,以及這些被困住的人們的故事。這件戰鬥之城計畫最終目的並不是為了製作一個動畫,而是一個過程。在這個過程裡試圖強調以一個人的能力可以做些甚麼。

One day I asked my aunts and uncles about my grandpa. They said Grandpa was a tall blond man with blue eyes, an orphan turned hero,  a goldsmith, a gold miner, a trainee, a successful businessman and a martial art master who defeated bandits. The stories they told about my grandpa are so surreal and hard to believe to be of one same person. I wonder which one is the real him?

阿姨舅舅們口中的阿公, 高大嚴肅,又是金毛又有碧眼, 挖過金礦、做過學徒、當過金師、打過山賊, 學過生意也打過雜, 從一個流浪孤兒變成迪化街的布行大老闆。阿公的故事怎麼聽都覺得遙遠又神奇, 到底哪個才是真實的阿公?

One day in April, the weather seems so changeable. Four siblings are on their way to visit their mother in a taxi. To the driver, they behave like strangers in the car while chaos are brewing in the air amidst the silence.

四月,陰晴不定的某一天,計程車司機載著四個像是陌生人般的姊弟。他們正在前往探望母親的路上,而車內的氣氛卻慢慢產生變化,本與乘客僅一乘之緣的司機,如何擺脫別人的家務事,為他們的母親完成一個心願?動畫系出身的張晉維和簡嵐淇,運用全身動作捕捉技術,將真人演員豐富的肢體動作及細膩的表情變化真實地呈現於動畫中。

Two Killers, one male and one female, went to an apartment at night to assassinate a drug addict. Unfortunately, the drug addict’s wife was also on the scene, they killed her and found something underneath her body….

女殺手與男殺手一起去刺殺一名毒蟲,在這過程中目擊現場的毒蟲之妻亦因而遭到滅口。一旦他們完成任務,準備離去,女殺手卻意外發現了襁褓中的嬰兒,此時門外有人敲門,她會做出什麼樣的決定?台灣少見挑戰黑色電影風格的原創動畫,導演鍾劭君以充滿視覺張力的風格化影像,搭配感染力十足的聲音設計,挑戰正邪之間的模糊地帶。

What is the concept of earth? In A Sand County Almanac written by Aldo Leopold, earth by definition invites all living beings interacted with it, and that which also includes mankind. When man-intervention dawns on the earth, life happened, so naturally as it seems.

在李奧帕得所著的〈沙郡年紀〉中,土地是概括地、生長在此的動植物群體,這當中也包含了人。那麼當過度的人性加諸在土地之上時,日常就這樣發生了。

It is about a family making a living on photo printing business in Taiwan. When the time pass, someone or something has done and changed. But in the deep of the memory and mind, there is something precious.

幻想一個台灣的小家庭,一個以攝影與沖印店謀生的小家庭。阿爸白手起家卻在意外後留下妻小,阿母撐起生意與拉拔小孩,追趕不上的卻是時代淘汰的腳步,在數位相機與電腦的普及,沖印店漸落伍消失,而阿母像是不甘心被淘汰遺忘似的,嘗試用底片留住那一點點過去的美好。或許時代不會逆轉或真有所不同,但仍想找回的,仍是那已逝去的、最懷念的時光。每一個場景都是設計後的風景,期待觀眾用心去體驗的小角落,讓動畫有更多得以咀嚼玩味的韻味。

The Microphone Test series is named after writer Huang Guo-Jun’s work Microphone Test. Two months before Huang committed suicide, he wrote an essay in epistolary style titled“To Mother,” in which he expressed his intention to kill himself to his mother. The writing style is filled with black humour and expressive quality, but he killed himself two months after he wrote this letter, and he did not leave any suicide note. The fictional aspect of the work contrasts with the realistic aspect of life, while the indistinguishable part within has always been my focus in my works.  

Microphone Test: A Letter to Huang Guo-Jun is a video letter to Huang Guo-Jun. Through conversations with Huang’s works created before he died, the letter depicts private family memories of three good friends, and attempts to portray what in fact belongs to my, or perhaps everyone’s memories through the memories of these others. Or perhaps, what is important is not whose memory it is, but the process that memory is constructed and viewed. I invited Yuan Zhi-Jie, Chen Liang-Hui, and Lo Tien-Yu to go back to the event site, and reenvisioned their memories in front of the camera. Eventually, I substitute the people in the video with animated figures drawn in lines, in accordance with my past creative methods, and leave only the background shot by the camera.

「麥克風試音」作品系列的名稱是來自作家黃國峻的著作《麥克風試音》。黃國峻在自死兩個月前,寫了一篇書信體的散文作品〈報平安〉,對著母親講述自己自殺的念頭。文筆充滿表演性質的黑色幽默,但卻在寫完這封信的兩個月後就自殺了,自殺時反而沒有留下遺書。 

 〈麥克風試音:致信黃國峻〉是寫給黃國峻的錄像信,透過與黃國峻生前作品的對 話,描述出三位好友的私密家庭記憶,也試圖透過這些他人的記憶,描繪出實際上也是我自己的、或許也是大家所共有的記憶。又或者重要的不是關於誰的記憶,而是關於記憶如何被建構與被觀看的過程。我邀請袁志傑、陳良慧、羅天妤回到事件的地 點,在鏡頭前重演他們的記憶。最後將影片中的人物,以我過去一貫的創作方式,用線描勾勒的動畫人物將他們取代,只留下攝影機所拍下的背景。

“Travelling Through Brush and Ink” is a stop-motion animation of a little modern man traveling through four significant ancient Chinese paintings, transforming himself into animals and plants, and becomes part of nature. Each painting represents four important stages of landscape art in Chinese history. Based on the original paintings, we built the sets and animated little character inside- all frame by frame. The animation is the opening film of 2016 annual exhibition National Palace Museum Taiwan.

“筆墨行旅”故事敘述一個現代男子進入畫中世界展開旅程,在旅程中形變成動物或植物,與自然合而為一。動畫中的四個場景分別為四幅歷史上重要的中國山水畫,畫中景色被製作成真實模型場景,人物和動植物在其中全是逐格拍攝。四幅畫分別為唐代〈明皇幸蜀圖〉、北宋〈谿山行旅圖〉、南宋〈巖關古寺〉及元代〈鵲華秋色圖〉,呈現中國山水畫講求可行、可望、可遊、可居之意境,為中國山水畫的歷代風格演變的代表。本動畫是台灣國立故宮博物院2016年度典藏展的開幕片。

Cyber Native 2011 is a re-edited single channel version of Cyber-Ring which is artist’s former work as the first series of Cyclorama Digital Art Creation Series exhibited in NTMOFA (National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts) in 2008-2009. There are diversified imaginations on cyber virtual identities and cyber spatial fields, including her Cyberbeings Series which consists of images of desexualised figures of a combination of animals, and of implying the Seven Deadly Sins. In addition, in Cyber Native Series a little girl is represented in the “Aboriginal-like” images through the artist’s self-portraiture. Ambling around in the cyberspace, the little girl, as if a giant Godzilla, a Flâneur wanders alone in the cyber world. Growing rapidly, the Internet technology has not only affected global lifestyles, but also developed a cyber popular culture, which circulates faster and faster. Netizens invent a distinctive language to communicate and develop a unique way to interactive among one another, and therefore they have transcended the boundaries of nation, race, gender, age, and so on. The postcolonial phenomenon of globalised cyber culture has already permeated through our daily lives and cultural identities.

網路原民 2011,是以作者 2008-2009 年於國立臺灣美術館展出 360°環景數位影音創作個展《虛鏡迴圈》所重新剪輯的單機播放版本。作者認為 3D 電腦動畫所生成的非物質性數位影像,最貼近網路虛擬世界由純粹數碼所組成的概念。作品呈現各種網路虛擬分身與網路空間場域的想像,從去性別、結合動物形象並隱含七宗罪寓意的《虛境公民》系列,到《網路原民》以自畫像呈現「類原住民」形象的小女孩,她身上與臉孔流動如原住民紋面的圖案,其實來自作者個人網站的螢幕擷取圖像,依稀還可辨認出網頁瀏覽器的圖示與操作選單滾動而過。穿梭遊走在網路森林與網路城市場景中的小女孩,也有了形象上的進化,在網路城市中遊走的小女孩彷彿哥吉拉巨獸般,獨自漫遊於網路世界。網路科技快速成長,影響全球人類的生活形態,並發展出越來越快速傳遞流通的網路流行文化,網路族群發展出獨特的溝通語言與人際互動方式,如今已跨越國家種族、性別、年齡…等界線,全球化的網路文化後殖民現象,也早已經悄悄滲入我們的生活與認同之中。 

 

The Animation Project: Shui-Jiao-She Community of Taiwan

During World War II, the Imperial Japanese Navy built an officers’ club in Shujiaoshe, along with dormitories (for servicemen and their families) in the north of its Tainan airbase. Overtaken by the Chinese Nationalist Air Force, those military dependents’ villages had been largely demolished by 2009 in an urban rezoning plan. This project tried to re-build conversations between communities from the directors’ viewpoints. This project includes 5 animations, courtesy of Cultural Affairs Bureau, Tainan City Government, Taiwan.
