Taiwan Academy Lecture
When Past Becomes Future and History Becomes Art
Lecture by Chien-Hui Kao
How to tell an art story, which has experienced modernism, colonialism and globalism since aftermath to now? Taking the exhibition “Once Upon A Time-Unfinished Progressive Past” as the case study, this talk wishes to reinvestigate the unresolved issue loaded with the following questions: Whose contemporary? Whose art? Whose history? What exactly are the life stories, daily events, social milieu and attitude towards the world that have shaped today’s art and its spirit? Focusing on the life and cultural memories of three post-war generations in East Asia, my paper will study how visual art was employed to represent taming and confusion, and how it imitated, manifested and resisted to speak of the individual and collective searches for an outlet. To further the discussion on the unclear boundaries within the writing of contemporary art history, my study wishes to reveal the consciousness of the unfinished modernity, colonial history and the mechanism in the past four decades.
