14th September 2019 Love Talk 幸福定格

Director SHEN Ko-shang / 2019 / Taiwan / 86 mins

Screening followed by Director’s Q&A

One found love, married and expects happiness. After the ceremony, love no longer is the only matter bonding the two; complexities of reality are added to the play. To engage into a conversation is the only possible mean to dissolve the boundary between two individuals. LOVE TALK discloses the daily conversations between eight young and mature couples. Their trivial dialogues about ‘love’ comprise topics ranging from sex life, parenting, housework division, problems with their mother-in-law, and even feeling fatigue and dull towards their marital life. These conversations reflect the authenticity of characters’ living condition, exploring the depth of intimate relationship in marriage while at the same time shedding a dim light on the significance of happiness. Perhaps this sort of happiness lies in the journey where seeking is the end itself, and happiness is certainly unable to being captured and fixed in a frame.

15th September 2019 Our Youth in Taiwan 我們的青春,在台灣

Director FU Yue / 2018 / Taiwan / 116 mins

Screening followed by Producer’s Q&A

Stories of bidding farewell to one’s youth and growing up are commonplace. The dream shared by the protagonists in the film is to build a better country by rebelling against the establishment. However, their fight becomes part of history in the turbulent relations between Taiwan and China. A Taiwanese student movement star, who fights against China, a celebrity Chinese student, who loves Taiwan, and I, a Taiwanese documentary filmmaker passionate about politics. Clashes should come between us, but we find the possibility of collaborating with each other in the social movements. After the biggest social movement in Taiwan in the past 24 years had taken place, we came close to realising our goals but gradually we were let down again. Is it still possible for us to continue fighting for the ideals we had been pursuing?

Liu Sanlian is a woman whose life is filled with drama: “Not going to Hollywood to pursue a career in acting would be a great lost,” comments her son.

Just ninety-five days ago, Liu Sanlian’s husband passed away after he had left the common flat three years ago. She then finds out that her husband’s insurance beneficiary has changed: it is not any longer their common son but a man named Jay. Liu Sanlian, filled with rage, rushes to Jay’s apartment with her son and her Oscar-winning acting skills to act out an “Orphan and Widow” theatrical husband-less drama.

The handsome Jay, however, has a vicious heart. He has such thick skin that he pretends to be innocent and not to know anything about the whole story. Liu Sanlian, on the side of righteoussness and morality, rages and swears that she will get back her husband’s insurance compensation.

Unexpectedly, Liu Sanlian’s rebellious son wants to find out the “truth,” and decides to move in with Jay. Putting a spoke in Liu Sanlian’s wheel, her son causes subtle changes to the relationship of Jay and Liu Sanlian, these uncompromising characters….
